Where two distinct deserts meet, the Mojave and the Colorado, Joshua Tree National Park stands as one of the most striking landscapes in the American Southwest. Its signature Joshua trees, with their spiky silhouettes and twisted branches, define the skyline, while ancient granite monoliths and wide desert plains stretch endlessly beneath the sun. The park’s otherworldly beauty comes alive in its contrasts: stark boulders against soft sand, vibrant wildflowers blooming between spines of cactus, and star-filled skies unmarred by city light.
Joshua Tree is more than a destination; it is a living classroom for desert ecology and resilience. The park’s ecosystems support a surprising abundance of life, from the resilient desert tortoise to elusive bighorn sheep. Spring rains bring bursts of color as desert marigolds, lupine, and chuparosa carpet the land, while cooler nights invite visitors to experience some of the clearest stargazing in the world.
Conservation remains central to Joshua Tree’s identity. The park faces growing challenges from climate change, drought, and increasing visitor impact, all of which threaten the delicate balance of its desert ecosystem. Ongoing efforts by the National Park Service and partner organizations focus on habitat restoration, renewable energy awareness, and community-led stewardship programs. Each visit is an opportunity to experience this desert sanctuary responsibly and to help preserve its timeless beauty for generations to come.
Our Experience
Joshua Tree NP was the first National Park we visited on our 14 month journey to drive to all national parks in the lower 48 states. It was intimidating as we were car camping for the first time and didn't know how difficult it would be to find a spot to park overnight. We drove all through the park and marveled at the Joshua Trees and Cholla cactus. When nigh time came, we found refuge in the Cap Rock parking area and had our first night in our car home - the beginning of a very long journey!
